If your child is starting to wear a tie when they go back to school, can they do it yet?

ds1 (11) has to wear a tie. We've been trying to teach him to do it, but he's struggling. (He took years to learn to do his laces )

But dh has taught him how to take his tie off and put it back on without undoing it, iyswim.

He isn't allowed an elasticated tie.

Ties for blinking 7 year olds. PE days will be fun.

Good idea about leaving it fastened, roisin.

Really pissed off now.

He has just been crying because he can't do it.

Secondary school is soon enough for ties imo.

my dcs both wore ties from age 7. Hardly any of the kids could actually tie them but they all became very adept at sliding the knot up & down far enough to put them on over their heads very quickly.

All three will be wearing ties when they go back, they start to wear them in yr6 here (shirt and tie as opposed to polo shirt).

DH wears the best sort - clip-on, lol.

DS1 starting secondary school next week.
From this year, they have made a rule of clip-on ties, no regular types.

Why?..................

Choking hazard apparently.

Health and safety/PC world gone mad IMO.

DS1 is going into reception and has to wear one. We have the choice of elasticated or proper and we've gone for the proper as other parents have said that the elastic stretches really badly and needs replacing constantly.

I'm also of the mind that if they insist that reception age children wear ties then they can damn well put up with tying them after PE .

jellybelly, DH has worn a clip-on tie for 29 years, because of the risk of being strangled.

Ok, so the schoolyard isn't that bad...I hope.

DD (6) has a tie as part of her winter uniform. She couldn't do it when she first started school, but her teacher and TA used to help them at PE time. She learnt to do her own tie within the first few weeks though. It is supring how quick they pick it up with a bit of daily prctise, even if it doesn't look that great to start with. Girls have an advantage - at least most of it is hidden beneath a pinafore

ds1 is suppossed to be starting on weds, and will have a tie, i cant do them, neither can he, (he is 9 and still cant do his laces properly, he just cannot get the hang of it)
so as dp will already be at work when we leave in the morning, he will haveto do it then i can tighten it up for him!

In the early 1970's we were expected to wear proper ties from reception (aged 4 1/2). I still remember us all having to stand up and chant "over and over and under my chin - pull it up and tuck it in" as we learnt to tie them...but I have to admit that most of the time we just loosened them to take them on and off and didn't retie it every time.

My DD needs one this year as she is starting mddle school but there is no way she will be able to tie it as she has dyspraxia and struggles with that sort of thing. I think I will do as a friend suggested, tie it then cut it on the back and put some Velcro on.

put it on them and show themhow ot loosen it and titghen it for when they ahve to get changed.

That way they can take their time learning how to tie it

Ds1 (7) can. At school they pair them up so each is doing the tie of a friend (and they can see what they are doing). Ds2 (5) still can't but they don't make a deal of it until they are in Year 2.

DS1 has worn one for a year - they don't do clip on ones for some reason. He can't do it up himself. DS2 has to wear one this year and he won't be able to either...

I brought it up with the Head and she said it was to do with discipline

DH doesn't even wear a tie for work and he seems to be doing OK

Ds uses the tried and tested slipknot approach. Dh re-ties it for him every weekend because after a week of sliding the knot up and down the knot looks a bit bedraggled!
Mind you he has just turned 9 so perhaps he should learn to tie it himself....

Well he has gone off to school and already I will have to go into school this afternoon and apologise to the teacher. I think I was a bit stroppy.

DS had to wear one all through primary school and could never fasten it. He statred High school today and no longer has to wear one - hurray!
