Help! New to UK - do they go back in September in summer or winter uniform?

It may depend on the school although I usually send them in the outfit most appropriate for the weather. Certaanly in previous years we've recieved a letter from the school stating children must wear their winter uniform after the first half-term so I think summer winter uniform is ok if you want to wear it.

depends on the weather, you could just send in winter uniform to save having to buy the summer uniform til next spring... quite often we have a hot spell when they go back

think about it, if at home would they still be running around in shorts rather than long trousers and/or dresses?

The coat thing will depend on the school. Usually state primaries will allow any coat, but Secondary schools may stipulate a certain colour of coat. Private schools will probably require you to buy the regulation coat/blazer.

At our primary you can wear any coat, but they have to wear black sensible shoes. At my dd1's new state secondary they again may wear any 'sensible' coat plus black school shoes.

Either until half term at ours. Policy on coats etc can vary - it should n't be so cold intially that you'd need pne until you can suss that out, maybe use a cheap rain jacket in the main colour or neutral (ie navy) to start with. Independent likely to be more strict than state.

Ours are ok about wearing the summer uniform if the weather is still ( if ever!) nice.

If starting for the first time in Sept though and you don't have it from last term, it's not worth buying summer clothes just for a few weeks wear. They might not fit by next year.

Either until half-term at ours. I picked up DD's dresses in the sales for a couple of quid each so it doesn't matter if she outgrows them by Easter.

We don't have any rules about this at the school I work at - you can wear summer or winter uniform all year if you want. In fact, not many girls above Y4 wear summer dresses at all - just polo shirt & skirt.
Does the school have a website? There may be a uniform list and any rules on there.

DD has been back three days and wore winter uniform for two and summer for the other. It entirely depends on weather, our school have no rules about that.

Our DD will be going back in her dress and switching to shirt and pinafore at half term.

It depends on the weather. ds starts his new school on Thursday , he's got a jumper so I might send him in summer uniform with a jumper and his blazer.

dd will start in her summer dress unless the weather is horrendous. Mostly cos its easier to wash and dry

Most new kids (ie FS2) would start in sinter stuff, but mine will go back in shorts/summer frocks for a few weeks at least.

Rustybear that's a bit about no summer dresses past yr4 - I so love DD in hers.

She is going up to big (junior) school (ie yr3) but I am hoping we can hold on to the summer dress for a year or so yet..

Our (state) school does not stipulate which uniform is worn at which period. Hence you have boys who detest trousers wear shorts year-round and vice versa.
One of dd's friends detests the summer dresses so wears skirts and polo shirts year round, and another friend dislikes the winter uniform so wears the summer dress with tights and a cardigan in winter.

Ask your dc which they prefer and send them in that.
A summer dress for a state school does not cost a lot. And if you buy it big it will still fit at Easter.
My dd wore the same dresses last september and then again after Easter. She will go back to school in them this Sept as they still fit. (I bought a large size to get the length as I don't like school dresses above the knee)

Rusty, that is interesting. Ds is going into Y5, and last year was a battle getting him into shorts. And yes, there were less girls in the summer dress.
Shame, because the dress looks much nicer than white poloshirt and grey skirt.

hippi D1 is going into yr 5 and he will be one of very few in shorts this sept. On the basis that he was one of maybe 4 in his class all summer!

I love it that he still wants to wear them tho - swear he would be in them all year if I let him
