Have we made an embarrasing mistake?

One of my dc's teachers is pregnant - not publicly, IYSWIM, we only know because a pg friend saw her at the a-n clinic and told us, and as the teacher now knows that we know, we quietly congratulated her. Anyway, dh went out to buy end-of-year presents for te teachers, and I suggested he buy something nice and self-pampering from a premium maternity range. He came back with a rather lovely pot of organic stretch-mark cream. I felt really uneasy about giving this to the teacher, but he insisted.

Should I have stood my ground? How would you feel if you were the teacher?

Ooh, stretch mark cream! A bit personal, I wouldn't have given her it. She might get a bit offended. Sounds like nice cream though.

mmmm i wouldn't really like stratch mark cream as a gift. bath soak yes. body butter yes. stretch mark cream noooo. could you use it yourself and get the teacher something else?

Oh god, they break up toorrow - how can I make up for it?

Did you give it to her? Was it wrapped up, in a bag etc?

I would have been embarassed as it's a) not public knowledge & what happens if she opens it in the staffroom in front of others and b) it's a bit of a personal pressie unless you know her (& her stretch marks) really well

Oh, yes, all wrapped up, with a lot of ribbon to discourage her from opening it up in class!

Maybe I'll bring a different gift tomorrow morning, and tell a white lie - "Dh told me what he had given you yesterday. I'm really sorry for such an insensitive gift, he meant it sincerely, but what do men know?!"

I'd have a quiet word with her, and blame dh completely. Bunch of flowers might help.

I'd say that you gave ner the wrong gift. say someone else is pregnant that you know and hte gifts got switched accidentally.

Sounds like a good plan! and you never know she might have thought it was a fantastic gift.

I would go for the tried and tested "blame dh" option.

I would have a word with her and blame DH. BTW, not everybody gets stretch marks & it is a bit personal, but she might like it!

I am not sure if all teachers do but I always open my presents in front of the children. They are usually really excited to watch you do this....

Although one year I opened up a present and it was a very lacy sexy nighty . From one of the mums who was always trying to talk me into getting pregnant . (This was pre children). I only knew her in a professional capacity too! .

Phew! It's OK.

I had a private word with her at pick-up, blamed dh utterly, blushed mightily (good god was I blushing you could have fried an egg on my face), and fortunately she saw the funny side. We ended up both PMSLing.

A few minutes later I had to nip back to the classroom to get something, and she had unwrapped it and was showing it off to a couple of other teachers, and they were all PMSLing!

D'you think dh did it deliberately, to get out of having to do this sort of task again?
