Levels for end of year 1

I know what the expected levels are for the end of key stage 1 and through key stage 2, but what is usually expected at the end of year 1?

Was talking to my sis this morning about her 6 year old's undecipherable (sp?) school report (never heard that one before have we?) and she had no idea what was average for this age and I have to admit neither do I. He was 1b in maths and science and 1c in reading and writing.

The reading and writing sounds a little low to me and she has been told he is struggling a little but not to worry (very airy fairy teacher according to sis.)

What is average for end of year 1?

1a is averageish for the end of year1..I would agree that is probably weakish based on those levels.

We didn't get any grading at all just lots of standard guff about excellent progress etc. I would love to know what is average as well.

They only thing I found out was from the ORT levels someone posted on another thread. DS has the reading age of 9 and a half years according to that

Sorry I got distracted...what I should add is it is likely he will catch up with the others. I would want to know what the school is doing to support him - has he done ALS for instance?

Absolutely no idea, sorry. DD's school doesn't do SATs at all, and don't give out any gradings whatsoever in key stage 3. No idea about later in the school re grades given out.

Regardless of grades, chances are the child will even out and catch up later. Reading and writing tend to be one of those things that just clicks, like Maths, and once it clicks - then off they go

My dd got level 4 english and level 3b maths.
It means nothing except to examine teaching standards I think.
Crtainly my dd has an excellent understanding of comprehension and grammar but is incapable of doing the most mundane things (like crossing a road or opening a packet of something) as she has no common sense whatsover
Your dn will catch up in his own time. I think that 2b is average for this age group iirc.

Level 3 and 4 at end of Year 1 would be highly exceptional grades, I think level 2 would be high - based on what people say are the norm for end of key stage 1. I am sure the Y2 SATs only assess to level 3.

She definately gained level 4 as I have her report to hand.
The results are for her last set of SATS when she was just turned 7.

So - end of key stage 1 then? Nt year 1? Just clarifying

Sounds like she is doing very very well, god on her. I taught children at secondary school who were struggling to reach level 4!

DD1 has just finished Year 1. Her school told us that 1b was an average mark for this stage and they expect 1/3 to 2/3 of a level progress by this time next year.

Mind you, that implies that they are aiming for a 2c, which would be on the low side of average would it not? 1a at end of Year 1 sounds more sensible.

He has had no extra support. I asked her if he had been in any catch up groups but she said no as the teacher said not to worry

But Sis did say DN had improved tremendously in the last month and I said that the assessment and reports were prob written a while ago and might not be where he is at now.

She said he was reading level 4 ORT which does sound a little behind to me.

He has a new teacher next year (having been with the same teacher through year 1 and reception) so hopefully he will get the extra support he needs

Key Stage 1 SATs only test up to level 3 so a 3a is the highest a 7 year old can be awarded. 1b is average for a year 1 child

The thing is I suppose you don't know where the others are...There might be loads who are weaker = how ever I thought ALS was for the likes of him childrne who may miss out on a 2b but who aren't SN.

I wouldn't worry about ORT levels because they may be reading other books too.

QueenB - I'm assuming that you are not in England or not in the state system or this was a while ago. 3 is the highest you can get in KS1 SATS.

2b is the average attainment for a child at the end of KS1 - that is, the end of year 2. It's unusual to give levels for the end of year 1 - I would ignore them if I were you - ther is a big difference between year 1 and year 2 in terms of 'academic" work!
