please forgive ne for my ignorance but to apply for a CoFE place do you have to go to church, be christened etc?

Mine are both at/going to a CofE school and they have not been christened or ever been to church.

no, you can apply anywhere you like

but check the school's admission policy (usually on local authority website) - if the school is oversubscribed you may find places given preferentially to children with church connections in some circumstances.
