I couldn’t see a thread for 2026 so thought I would make.

How is everyone prepping? Thoughts on using a tutor vs at home?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I've had calls from quite a few parents in recent weeks asking about preparing for 4+. Everyone has their own opinion and own situation, but my advice (as a former Head of Pre-Prep) would be to do your research on the schools you're applying to and see what your son/daughter can do.

It's absolutely fine to prepare at home, but sometimes a session or 2 from a tutor can help point you in the right direction. For example, no 4+ assessment will ask about capital letters or letter names (alphabet song) yet these are often the go-to things parents focus on. They will ask letter sounds (that's where the phonics comes in) and lowercase letters (apart from first letter in their name).

Good luck everyone!! 😀

I think both can work well, and using a tutor doesn’t have to mean intensive coaching. I’m a teacher and tutor preparing children from 4+ through to 16+, and understanding the assessment process and what schools are looking for definitely helps you make the practice more purposeful. A tutor can tailor the questions and follow-ups, as well as help children feel comfortable talking to an unfamiliar adult. However, parents can absolutely support those skills at home too.

I’d keep it relaxed with conversations about a book they’ve enjoyed or something they’re interested in. Ask “What makes you think that?” and give them time to explain. The aim is to help them share their own thoughts confidently without rehearsing perfect answers.

No tutor and not doing anything different at home as we always read / do activities and games. She goes nursery full time so hopefully will be picking up some of the required skills there.
main issue we will face is the separation anxiety!
