Beckenham primaries: Clare House versus Beckenham Green

We are in the fortunate position of being in catchment for both Clare House and Harris Beckenham Green in Beckenham. Two of the best schools. Clare House undoubtedly has the best long standing reputation and is probably still regarded as the most desirable school in the area. However, Beckenham Green has recently become extremely good (I think since the appointment of the new head master). Its academic results are excellent and now much better than Clare House. By contrast, Clare House’s results have declined in the last 2 years. I am very torn on which to put as first choice - Beckenham Green looks better academically but would I be stupid to turn down the opportunity to send my child to Clare House? Any good or bad comments on either school would be appreciated! Thanks

By reputation, Harris schools can be rather marmite - some love them, but others really hate how strict they are. Have uou looked around them both?

Try asking the Beckenham & Penge Mums and Dads group on Facebook.

You are correct in that Clare House has the best reputation over time. Have you spotted Clare House is 2FE but Harris 1FE? I would visit all the schools you are considering, speak to the heads and teachers to find out more. Also worth considering leaver destinations.

Have you visited both schools? You need to consider outside space in both, especially if your DC is a very active child. I know both schools well and neither has an abundance of playground space.

I have visited one school so far. Due to see the other soon. I’m more worried about environment than outdoor space per se. Size of outdoor space isn’t a huge concern but I want it to be a nice place for my child to spend her time. I am big on academics and behaviour - I don’t really consider any schools “too strict” nowadays. I’d also like to be around similar minded parents as much as possible as it would be nice to make local friends through school. I wonder whether Clare House has become complacent about academics because it’s so popular it doesn’t really need to try anymore. I’ve noticed a lot of the less popular schools have higher scores and CH is only 8% above the Bromley average which isn’t that impressive for a school that is meant to be the best.

I’d also be interested in any views on the new head at CH - I note she has only been there a couple of years.
