Hi! Prepping for reception here.. I can’t seem to find a lilac/purple gingham dress in 100% cotton (other colors seem more available) has anyone got suggestion of suppliers? Thank you 😊

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

M&S. If you go online and look at the dresses, the models are wearing the more common colours but you can select the lilac one

I think lots of suppliers are short of uniform at the moment. I had to buy new PE shirts for DS at the weekend and the assistant told they'd had an unusual surge of sales already.

Good luck with your dresses.

Ok, good to know! Likewise, good luck!

It's the time of year when the sun comes out and people realise that the Summer uniform doesn't quite fit...(We have all been there in year one and above!)

Do you mean getting prepped for a reception Child starting in September? In which case I would skip the summer dress and go straight into winter uniform with a short sleeve polo or t shirt in case it is still warm. You will only use the summer dresses for about six/eight weeks as most go into winter uniform after the autumn half term, and they probably won’t fit at all by next year.

I buy the dresses in next size up so that it's a bit long in the autumn but fits by next spring. It doesn't need to fit around the waist like a skirt so being a bit big doesn't matter.

My local Asda sell them because a local school has lilac

Memoriesbeingmade · 06/05/2026 06:01

Asda sell poly cotton school dresses in a light purple. They wash well too.

OP was specifically looking for 100% cotton. Poly cotton is usually 60/40 % blend.

You don’t need a summer dress for starting reception. They can start in winter uniform.

Are you sending her in summer unform in September? By October she will need the winter uniform. Most girls we know have worn the pinafore dress or skirt rather than a summer dress to start school.

LoserWinner · 07/05/2026 10:35

Cotton will need ironing after every wash. Polycotton doesn’t. Unless there’s a very good reason, or if you actually like ironing, I’d recommend polycotton for school wear.

Local supermarkets tend to stock school uniforms in the colours needed for their local schools.
My local Tesco doesn’t have lilac school dresses but the one in the next town does as one of their local schools has purple and lilac uniforms.
Don’t forget to go to school second hand uniform sales. Good quality uniforms are bombproof - I passed mine down through my 4 kids and they were still in great condition. I got good-as-new, second hand summer dresses from school for 50p. Sometimes they would give them away if they had a lot of stock!

Word of warning on the M&S cotton dresses, they do shrink so worth sizing up. Mine always look rather mini by May half term!! (We’re only allowed to wear them Easter-Summer)
