when exactly will my DS start school?

My friend and I are sitting here confusing each other (we are enjoying a glass of wine whilst the DCs play which may account for it)
When will our DSs start school.

Her DS was 3 in Jnauary
My DS1 was 3 in April.

We can't decide who is right

Both September 2009 or January 2010 if the school has 2 intakes (increasingly fewer do )

We thought it had something to do with the 5th birthday. Is that not the case? is it just the september of the school year in which they will be 5?

Depends on school intake.

So if the school has a January, Easter, September intake (ours does) then her DS would go in January 2010, yours in March/April 2010.

If they have a single September intake then they would start school together in September 2009.

So is it the term before their 5th birthday or the term after their 4th birthday, as a rule?

I am assuming that my little one who will be 4 in june 2010 will start in September 2010 - am I wrong?

Yes September 2010 - dd2 will be 4 in June 2010 and will start in the September. She will do half days for a term - village school and only has one intake.

Most school now do one intake and it is normall the term after they are 4. So 4 in JAn and April 09 will mean school in sept 09.

DD1 was 3 last september, she'll start primary school the week shes 5 (september 2009) but this particular school has 2 intakes

sept-april babies start in sept (with sept-dec babies doing full days and jan-april babies half days at the beginning)

may-august babies start in january and school/parent decide if 1/2 days necessary

Schools round here do a September and a January intake. Children with birthdays from 1st September to 28th/29th February start in September, those with birthdays from 1st March to 31st August start January.

It really depends on the admission policy of the school (if they set their own admission policy - voluntary aided i.e. church schools or foundation schools). If the school is a 'normal' LA or community school it depends on the admission policy of the LA.

Where I live most schools have 2 points of entry - Sept to Dec birthdays start in the Sept. Jan to Aug birthdays start in Jan.

So it depends!
