How concerned do I need to be?
My child is almost 7, year 2 in a very small independent school.
In kindergarten (age 3-4), preprep (reception), and year 1, we were told she was excelling/bright/achieving beyond her age. Lots of feedback, really enjoying school.
Now in year 1, feedback is very different - she lacks concentration, doesn’t want to do homework, won’t practice spellings and so each week doesn’t get any right in her tests. I try to talk to her about school but she doesn’t want to talk. I’ve had 3 meetings with her teacher who sounds sympathetic and saying all the right things but no improvements.
School is generally lovely - small and nurturing but they don’t push results (which has its positives and negatives).
I have used the online year 2 SATs tests to see how she is performing and she does know the answers but concentration/reading the question etc is all very poor.
We have neurodiversity in the family, but they seem to be very extreme when I discuss it I.e saying get an ehcp for her (which is laughable as I see how much parents struggle to get one for children with extreme difficulties).
Is this normal? Should school or I be doing more?
Any tips for concentration or spellings?
We are generally a tech free family, but I’m willing to buy a tablet and get some apps if they exist to help her. I’m so worried that she isn’t meeting her potential and will get lost in the crowd.
