Books for 9 year olds

Hi,

I was wondering what books people recommend for nine year olds (year 4).

I have a boy whose favourite books at the moment are the Wimpy Kid books. He has read lots of other books but keeps coming back to those to reread, which is fine…

Just looking for some new inspiration for his bookshelf/ library visits.

They’re aimed at 11+ ( so depends on your ds) but the nathanial Lessore books are brilliant ( and funny) also my ds has been loving some Christopher Edge books , escape room and black hole cinema club .

The wild robot is a brilliant book too

Stitch and Tin by Padraig Kenny are well regarded too

Try Danny Wallace “The day the screens went blank” and others. My DS is Y6 and a slightly reluctant reader but these books are providing a way to step away from Wimpy Kid books and try something slightly more challenging!

Percy Jackson series of books? My son loved those.

HeartyViper · 20/12/2025 07:11

My son has loved the Harry Potter series, Percy Jackson series, Tom gates books, Katherine Randell impossible creatures, the beast quest series, any Roald Dahl.

Treehouse series (for girls and boys)

Thank you.
He’s rediscovered the baby aliens series by Pamela Butchart I got him a couple of years ago and is reading that at the moment.
I also have Danny Wallace books, Harry Potter and Narnia series ready for him next.

Is his reading ability broadly in line with his age?

LoudMoose · 23/12/2025 17:58

I think my daughter was around that age when she read the David Baddiel books.
