Spelling apps like TT Rockstars

DS in year 2 hates learning his spellings. When the topic comes up (most days), it is either a pitched battle, tummy ache, or a disappearing act of which no mere muggle should be capable.

On the other hand he hated tables too, but now in one term he has gone from stumbling through his 2x to being a sub-2 second master of his 2, 5 and 10 division facts and is currently working well through 3 and 4. This is entirely due to an obsession with beating unnamed peers on TT Rockstars.

So MN: please help me find an app that can test primary-level spellings (ideally I can also load my own list) in a “competitive” game-style environment. The competitors don’t have to be real people or just has to look like there are real people playing against him each day so he has an element of competition.

I don’t mind paying a subscription if it looks “cool”, and there are points/league tables available.

thank you!

We use spelling shed

I'm surprised the school aren't using spelling shed already if they are using timetable rockstars

Thanks for the recommendation and a good tip, I’ll check with school. They haven’t advertised a spelling app, I agree that’s a bit odd so maybe I missed something.

I can hardly believe how motivated my ds has been by TT Rockstars (it did nothing for my older dd).

Apps don't work at all for my dc so no help there

But I just wanted to say that my ds was like yours and I despaired. We took all pressure off and just read to him and encouraged him to read for a bit as it was becoming so stressful.

Things changed by yr 4 and he started being much more amenable to working independently and he's now really keen. He's also now gd at reading, having previously had a meltdown everytime we tried to do a page or 2.

Sometimes it just needs time
