English support year 4

My DS has struggled all through primary. Language delay, emotionally struggles with school. We’ve spent the past few years trying to figure things out (S&L support etc). We’ve also trying some small group work with school to help build confidence and resilience.

Very slowly getting there but as DS has struggled to engage with learning , he is very behind in English. Doesn’t know his homework at all.. like he has no idea. Luckily he is good at maths. But anything reading or writing is difficult and really want to help him. We did look at getting a dyslexia assessment but the teacher thought he wouldn’t engage in the assessment. We’ve tried private tutor and that didn’t work out.

School are supportive but of course they are limited with what they can offer. We did look at moving to private but not sure if moving him away from friends would cause problems.

I would appreciate any ideas? I would happily pay for online support if anyone knows of anything? Or apps?

What is he struggling with - reading, writing, phonics, motivation to write or the mechanics of doing so? What did the tutor try? What does he enjoy that you might be able to embed literacy in?

What was the issue with the tutor? Ime you might need to try a couple to find someone who works - and avoid the ones who are aiming to get kids through the 11+ and see if you can find someone who specialises in kids who need extra support and can build their confidence at the same time as helping them.
