...as our school are saying it is but have never come across this rule before.

Anyone know?

Beetroot,

If your DS goes to music school, it is probably somewhat inevitable that he will be either more able to cope with musical challenges, or pushed a bit harder.

I think a total beginner would still benefit from learning recorder first and flute a little later, especially if we're talking about group lessons with a teacher who may not even be a flautist (which is a very common scenario - I was taught by a French Horn player for 5 years before the woodwind/brass teacher changed and was, fortuitously, a flautist).

No Bramshott, fair enough I was talking rubbish! I just thought that a piccolo would be like a smaller flute.

I have learnt something !!

I learnt the flute from 11 to 18 and got to grade 6 but I never knew the word 'embouchure' either! ???

My 8yo dd is learning the fife at school, she started at 7. They say it's a prelude to learning the flute. She learned the recorder before that but not all the fife group have.

I was told it's the teeth but didn't understand that also reaching the holes/keys whatever they are called officially can be difficult for little hands.

Ooh, Beetroot, are you trying to prove you're right by any chance?

I'm sticking to my guns - 7 is too young.
