School trousers-help!

Not sure if this is really the correct board for this but can anyone recommend some decent grey school trousers;

DS is 4, very slim, all the 3-4 age trousers are far too short but absolutely huge on his waist, even the adjustable ones. So 4-5 just look ridiculous😬

Extra points for pull on ones as think he might struggle a little with a clasp (or just elect not to go to the loo🤣)

How strict are your school? My DS still wore leggings in reception. In year 1 we moved to joggers. He goes in wearing black minecraft joggers/shorts and they don't say anything. He can't do the clasp and doesn't like how trousers feel and he's 7. So we stick with joggers or the joggers material shorts. Our school isn't strict though, he's been wearing trainers the whole time too.

John Lewis do a slim fit that is also adjustable at the waist.

As advised every year…size down in the age and choose long/extra long length and slim fit.

although why the retailers haven’t cottoned on yet is baffling. I asked this question 20 years ago!

M&S uniform is my go to! They do all sorts of inclusive designs and I've found them great for my SEN son.

M&S do slim fit school trousers with a slim waist fitting. Worked for our skinny boy. You can usually only get them online though, so you may need to be quick on ordering.

M&S 'extra long' longer length trousers are the only ones that fit our DS. Unfortunately I think their grey ones are almost sold out at the moment but keep checking. They do currently have 2-3Y in regular longer length - not extra long - that you could try:

Next on line - big variation on regular/slim/comfort fit on school trousers, starting from Age 3. Also skinny/slim/regular fit leg. They don’t appear to do long length anymore, but you should be able to play tunes on the the waist fits. They have grey in stock. My eldest has just left school. IME Next school uniform is most hardwearing.

M&S have an easy dressing line starting at age 3 - sold out online but maybe you'd be lucky in store?

M&S in general do a slim fit and a super slim fit both with adjustable waists, and I think pull on in smaller sizes.

Tu do great trousers, when was little we did sized down waist and longer leg.

Hes now starting secondary and still wearing an age down (age 11 when he is 12 in Oct), but normalised with regular leg at some point.

Angrymum22 · 24/08/2025 18:06

M&S usually have a double hem on them so you can let them down if your DS grows upwards rather than outwards. It saves a lot of time letting them down and seeing a new hem.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 24/08/2025 21:04

Matalan. They do 5-6 for example, but also age 5, age 6 etc. I’ve found that the single age ones fit my skinny 5 year old better. He would wear 6-7 in normal clothes.
