Uniform - Gingham Dresses

Hello!

My DD is starting primary school in September, she’s my first born so this is all new to me.

One of the school Mums had already bought their uniform for September so I thought I’d do the same. I’ve been on several websites and all sizes are out of stock for the colour we need. Asda George is apparently “the” place I need to go.

Does anyone know if places like Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s restock their dresses before September or have I completely missed the train here?

any reassurance would be amazing!!

I've never bought school uniform before the end of August. It'll be fine xxx

DappledThings · 01/07/2025 17:45

Annoyingly all the shops have their "back to school" deals before they've even broken up. Stock is irritatingly low I find at the end of August which is when I (and the rest of us who aren't chronically over-prepared) want to actually buy it but there be some. You might just need to visit a few different supermarkets.

Curlysusie · 01/07/2025 17:50

Can always try Vinted?

Whatton · 01/07/2025 17:51

The gingham dresses will most likely not be restocked until the run up to the summer term, not the return to school in September. I go round the supermarkets at Christmas and get summer uniform on clearance.

TeenToTwenties · 01/07/2025 17:52

I wouldn't bother with a gingham dress for the start of reception, just go straight into winter.
Then in future years use the dress from the summer in September if so desired.
(Or see if PTA is selling second hand at summer fair or reception open evening).

Don't bother with gingham dresses for September. Even if it is warm enough, she'll only get a few weeks wear maximum out of them before Autumn draws in. The older children may re-ware their dresses from this summer at the start of the new year, but it would be a waste for a Reception child who may very well be in the next size by next summer. Stock up when you start to see them appearing next March/April time.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 01/07/2025 18:27

Realistically you're going to be hitting Easter next year before you need them, at which point the shops will be full of stock for them. What's on sale now is pretty much the dregs of the stuff for this current school term and come September it'll be back to "winter" uniform.

YessicaHaircut · 01/07/2025 18:31

It’s worth a try to phone the school direct to see if they have any. My son’s school has a rail of secondhand uniform available outside the office year round for 50p an item, there are always loads of gingham dresses.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 01/07/2025 18:33

Generally the uniform available over the summer will be for autumn/winter weather, so dresses unlikely to be restocked. Next and asda both let you stock check stores, not sure on other shops, so you may find some by doing that. But I would probably say go with a skirt and shirt this year, then next September use the dress you bought in spring if you want to/it still fits.

My dc's schools a lot of the girls went back in the gingham dresses and some wear them until October half term.

Go on eBay, you'll be able to pick up a couple that will do and then she has a choice.

ThatsGoingToHurt · 01/07/2025 18:51

I didn’t buy gingham dresses when my DD started Reception. They will only be worn for a few weeks in September before the weather cools down if you are lucky. My DD also grows rapidly so I knew they would be too small by the time the weather warmed up next Easter.

BendingSpoons · 01/07/2025 19:22

Given the recent hot weather in many parts of the country, along with some uniform sales in supermarkets, people have likely been buying lots of dresses. Give it a few weeks and they are bound to be back in stock.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 01/07/2025 20:29

I doubt they’ll be back in stock. Mine started in winter uniform.

Tooteefrootee · 01/07/2025 20:45

Agree with those saying to wait. DD was too tall to wear her Seotember clothes by Easter, so they would have been a waste. Skirt/pinafore and top is fine for the first term!

I have actually been looking for new summer dresses today, as I managed to dye DD's a funny colour (and i got the next size up)...not many instore, but got some from Tu (Sainsbury's) online. Decent enough quality, good variety of styles/colours and decent price.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/07/2025 20:50

I get them on vinted, I wish I’d done it from the start of reception. Great quality, cheap as chips usually, loads of options.
