Year 1 - numeracy - what should they be able to do?

Just wondering if anyone could tell me what numeracy goals should have been achieved by the end of year 1?

My son seems very interested in numbers at the moment (wants to write bigger and bigger numbers down) but am not sure what he is learning in this area at school as he won't tell me and no parents evening until the end of term.

Any info much appreciated.

Not sure what they are supposed to have achieved but if hes interested then you can work on number bonds with him (ie knowing number bonds to 10 means that if you say '2' he will need to know that the number bond to 10 is '8') You can also work on doubling so that he knows what double 2 is etc.
of course you can also request 5 min meeting with teacher just to say that he seems very interested in numbers - how can you support him at home?

Thanks very much for your advice "ohyoubadbadkitten". The doubling idea sounds good so we will try that. I think DS knows the number bonds to 10 but am wondering if he should know higher ones now?

Does anyone else know what yr 1s should be doing in numeracy?

This site has the Yr1 targets.

Count in 2, 5 and 10s. A

Know all number bonds to 10 - can extend to show 3+7 = 10 similar to 30+70=100

Know 2D and 3D shapes

Know numbers to 2o but my top children would know numbers to 1000 and above

Know odd and even numbers

Recgnise and use coins to 20p.

I don't think DD's school does number bonds. Not come across them with her (equivalent to Y1).

They may not call them that, but I'm sure they do them - they are the pairs of numbers that add up to 10.

They almost certainly do them Hula - perhaps just not call them that. Pairs of numbers adding to 10 or 20

Yes, know what they are - but dd doesn't appear to do them. She would know how to work it out and do the Maths, etc, but pretty sure they have ever learnt these bonds in this way. They don't following the NC so could be the reason I guess - not sure. Keep meaning to ask her teacher.

By the end of Year 1, most children should be able to?

Count at least 20 everyday objects.
Count forwards and backwards in ones, starting from a
small number.
Count forwards and backwards in tens (zero, ten, twenty,
thirty?)
Read and write numbers to at least 20.
Put the numbers 0 to 20 in order.
Use the words first, second, third...
Given a number from 10 to 20, say the number that is 1
more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less.
Use the words add, sum, total, take away, subtract,
difference between? in practical situations.
Know by heart all pairs of numbers that make 10,
e.g. 3 + 7, 8 + 2.
Add and subtract two numbers under 10.
Compare two objects or containers, and say which is
longer or shorter, or heavier or lighter, or which holds more.
Name and describe simple flat and solid shapes, e.g. It's
got 3 corners.

You see, from that list the only think I am unsure DD would know is teh number bond bit by heart. She can do plenty of other stuff above and beyond these though, and could certainly determine what the number bonds are in some way.
