Waiting list for Reception- continuing interest

We didn’t get into our first choice school, but am I correct in understanding how the Waiting list for Reception- continuing interest works? We are in Hertfordshire.

If we like the school we are originally offered and accept it while being on the waiting list. If we then get an offer from one of the schools on our waiting list (which could be our second choice or third choice? We don’t have the choice to accept or reject the waiting list offer, the waiting list offer just gets automatically accepted and we automatically lose the school we were originally offered?

Yep that’s correct, but you can edit the list for which you are on continuing interest for. So after my child was accepted into their fourth place school I took one off the list. I could’ve added one in its place but chose not to. After the next round of allocation you can edit it again.
