Boys school trouser recommendations

DS starting reception this year, new to the world of buying uniform.

Uniform policy is grey trousers

Does anyone have any recommendations for trousers?

I would like:

Straight leg cut (he's high percentile, skinny cut is too tight for him)
Adjustable waist
Mock fly/pull on style. Think he might struggle to do a fly and zip alone.
Good quality and hard wearing!

I’m in the same boat so I will be following! 😊

M and s

Tu from Sainsburys worked wonders… tough, washable, a few styles. The shorts are great for summer too.

AlphabetBird · 19/04/2025 13:41

M&S - they have a ‘room to grow’ hem which is really good. Wash really well.

mynameiscalypso · 19/04/2025 13:42

M&S have been good for us.

Boys school trousers are usually pull on style for young kids with waist tighteners. Many shops do a plus fit if normal fit doesn’t fit well round the hips and thighs . Many shops will do a long leg if your child is taller than average so needs extra leg length.

Next have a great range for school trousers. Have been getting my son's clothes there all

LimeQuoter · 19/04/2025 13:45

Next do slim fit, regular fit and a a larger fit. They have different brands and makes too

Thatroomismine · 19/04/2025 13:45

M and s. If you wait till June they usually have a good uniform sale on. My youngest is leaving school this year and eldest finishing uni and have always bought m and s, they've passed down 3 dc so money well spent.

Flubadubba · 19/04/2025 13:46

Tu from Sainsbury's. Hard wearing, wash well, and are cheap enough to replace when they inevitably have a huge growth spurt. They will have a few 20-25% off events between now and start of term.

Same with polo shirts, except they will be splattered with mud and paint marks quickly...

londongirl12 · 19/04/2025 13:46

Got all my DS uniform from Asda

FuckityFux · 19/04/2025 13:53

Anything that fits him, is my advice, although I tended to buy uniforms from M&S as it washes well and they always do a 20% off around June. However, if you buy them early, consider buying the next size up as one year my DS shot up and his trousers were too short come October and there were none left in the local shops.

Some youngsters wear out the knees really quickly and you’ll need to patch them so if yours is the type to skid along the floor, then consider buying cheaper ones to begin with and see how they fare.

Sassybooklover · 19/04/2025 14:24

I used to buy George but found the last time, they didn't last very long. I now buy M&S. I buy the ones that are double hemmed, so you can unpick the hem, and it gives you another 3 inches in length!! A lifesaver with a son who has long legs and will grow out of the trousers, length wise well before the waist. They have an adjustable waist too, which again is a lifesaver, as my son has such a small waist!!

AngelaMerkin1 · 19/04/2025 17:39

Next, to me the fabric feels much better quality compared to the M&S ones.

gh15jhfa · 20/04/2025 13:10

Thank you! Looks like M&S, Next and Tu are the ones to investigate.

I didn't know about the sales in June etc, do you think they will likely sell out instantly? Not sure if I should just stock up now?

School has branded polo shirts, jumpers and PE kit so mostly just need trousers and socks for non branded stuff.

I will probably get a few non branded polos and jumpers etc as back ups for when they are inevitably lost or dirty.

They won’t sell out, almost every child in the land needs them so stock levels are huge, just go reasonably early if you can.

mynameiscalypso · 20/04/2025 19:07

No need to buy anything now at all; I’ve never had an issue with stock levels. They are constantly replenished.

Heckythump1 · 21/04/2025 08:28

I don't have a boy, but after 6 years of uniform buying and trying all the shops, they are all much of a muchness, I buy everything from Asda now as it's washes and lasts just as well as M&S but is miles cheaper (even with staff discount 🙈🤣) it also fits my scrawny girls really well, I find M&S incredibly wide on them, especially bottoms.

Caledoniadreaming · 22/04/2025 08:52

We went with John Lewis school trousers with the reinforced knees. Lasted until the week before Easter break (which is a record with my DS) - they have the adjustable waistband and you can bring the hem down if needed.

It's also worth checking out the school pre-loved sales if they have them. We bought 2 new school jumpers and polo shirts and the rest from the pre-loved sales. 2 jumpers and 2 polo shirts cost about £10.
