They're spending the day on the Watercress Steam Railway in Hants in 3 weeks' time to make the experience more authentic but I have to do the costume. I'm grateful I have 3 weeks albeit with Whitsun in the middle, though! We have the long sorts, or will have once I've done the cutting down; we have long (black) socks (footy), a shirt, (white rather than the more usual grey), perhaps, but I'm stumped with a school cap and the button up jacket or coat! Any ideas anyone?

The school are doing the gas mask and label!

How about a tank top instead of a blazer? Where I work we often have children come to see us in WW2 costume. they look so sweet!

We get a lot of our stuff on ebay. Admittedly we're looking for authentic clothes but there are always bargains to be had on there for an old school cap etc.

And I must say I'm finding some really funny and quite poignant articles and copies of letters re the wearing of school shorts by adolescent boys up to the 1970s, online!! Hadn't really thought about it- but have I? I was quite pleased when my almost 9 year old happily said he'd wear shorts to his junior school now the weathers' warm! I remember at my village primary where the head mistress DEMANDED boys wore shorts in the summer up to the age of 11! And I've really noticed how none of the local secondary schools have girls summer dresses anymore! They all wear the same winter garb all year. Completely off topic, but an interesting observation, I think.

My brother had a classic school cap in grey AND a grey gabardine mac when he was in infants school in 1964- WISH all that stuff hadn't been passed on or slung, now, but who was to know?? We didn't need WW2 school projects- we had our own parents banging on about it all the time!
