Year 3 maths and ADHD

Hi, my eldest has ADHD, she's always done well in school but recently is really struggling with maths. I have been trying to support her at home but have no idea how to when every couple of minutes she loses focus and starts doing/talking about something else. Her arithmatic skills are fine, but now they are getting longer questions (in written form rather than number sentences) it seems like she cant grasp what is being asked until it is explained to her. I don't like doing school work at home for various reasons (equally her school set minimal home work) but appreciate she does probably need some extra practice and time to work through things. I just don't know where to start. It's starting to impact her confidence. Any tips to make it engaging for her? Or workbook recommendations we can look at together?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

CGP do good workbooks. Try and get her to tell you what the question is asking for. Lots of it is to do with having good arithmetic skills (which you say she has) but just finding it in the wordier questions. So if you go through some together she should soon realise what’s expected in the question by looking for a keyword and then working it out. Make it into a game to find the keywords and numbers and to write an equation/ simpler question.

We had this too. Two things I’d recommend:

Getting her eyes checked as straining eyes could be a factor

And consider Dyslexia. This can have an impact on understanding Matfs questions once they become more wordy Flowers
