Year 6 yearbook help

I have been asked to write the news section of the school leavers’ yearbook. I’ve made a list of the big news items from the last seven years - keeping it child friendly. They are a bit grim (see list below) so I’d like to add some fun stuff about trends/music/film/TV. My child says she can’t think of anything! Can you think of anything to add?

New head teacher
Five prime ministers
Covid pandemic
Donald Trump elected US President twice
The Queen died
Charles coronation
Lionesses win Euros
Taylor Swift Eras tour comes to London

Theres been two olympic games (2020/2021 and 2024)

JassyRadlett · 13/03/2025 08:01

The Platinum Jubilee was huge at my kids' school.

Was there any new playground equipment/new school infrastructure?

Perseverance Rover landed on Mars and is still sending us amazing pictures

Fot the pandemic can you focus on the "good" - eg the day the playgrounds reopened, etc?

Did your school get many Ukrainian kids? Ours did and I can imagine us marking it with eg Our School stepped up to support Ukraine and welcomed our Ukrainian students or whatever. At any rate if there are Ukrainian families it should be mentioned.

You could also do the top grossing films in the UK for their first and last years of primary? Wiki says 2018 was Avengers: Infinity War and 2024 was Inside Out 2 (so both relatively kid friendly)

and memes which might feel more relevant to them than TV shows?

Loubydoo · 13/03/2025 08:16

@JassyRadlett thank you. I can’t believe I forgot the jubilee. We did a special playground party so that’s going in! And the Mars landing is another great one.

for the pandemic we’re going to focus on Joe Wicks!

Are there any school achievements / events you could focus on?

Have the school teams won anything?

Any fundraising events, local or school based that the children have been involved in?

School / community events, for example celebrating the Olympics, street parties for the coronation

Individual student achievements?

I would take Donald Trump off that list to be honest. You have lots of ideas here.

TimeToBake · 13/03/2025 08:46

Films and memes are a good idea. Also more music than just Taylor, you could mention songs from a variety of artists that have been popular with children over the last 7 years.

Maybe various viral TikTok dances…. They shouldn’t be on TikTok but a lot are or at least have done the dances from when they would have been about 8. Also things like the popularity of Minecraft, Fortnite and Pokémon etc during their primary school years might be fun things to mention

Most of them probably liked Peppa Pig when they were 4/5, although they’ll deny it now of course, but it might be funny to mention that while they’re busy growing up, mummy pig has another piglet on the way.

Greta Thunberg started doing her climate thing around 2018 so you could mention her. Lots of kids are passionate about climate change.

That really hot summer we had a couple of years ago…depending on where you are. They might remember if the school made any allowances on uniform or changed anything they did due to it.

Flubadubba · 13/03/2025 08:47

Has there been anything locally that has opened that the kids love?

TickingAlongNicely · 13/03/2025 08:49

Brexit.

ADifferentSong · 13/03/2025 08:51

Any changes to the school, such as a new library? Has the uniform changed?
