How do you go about moving primary schools?

We are thinking of moving. DD is in Reception currently, we would move during the summer.

How do i go about getting a place at a primary school in the new area? Will all good schools be fully subscribed?

We moved house just after DD1 started school. I phoned up the school that I wanted her to go to, and said we were moving into the area and could I apply for a place please. Luckily the school wasn't oversubscribed and all I had to do was fill in some forms, proof of our new address and she went after half term.

I'm not sure what happens if the school is full - they may ask you to contact the LEA and find out about schools with places.

We moved ds1 at this age (though he hadn't been to school at all). We contacted the County school places team, and visited the ones we were interested in.

LEA won't confirm places with you until you have a definite address (contracts signed, etc.)

Good schools are likely to be full, but it depends on birthrates, and on the area, but I think newcomers may have some priority over residents. The LEA may be able to advise you.

We got a phone call on the last day of the summer term to say there was a place for him at our first choice school

Good luck!

You have to phone the school you want them to go to. They will either offer you a place or put you on a waiting list. You can then contact the council and tell them what you have done, they will then send you the paperwork to appeal for a place (if the school is full) and give you details of the nearest school with space. Buckingham CC have very helpful as we are currently trying to find a school place for DD when we return to the UK this summer.

That's very helpful and encouraging, thanks

Will get on to the LEA
