Application during house move

Hi, Our son is due to start school in Sept 2025. We are moving to a new area and was in the process of buying a house in January, the instruction from the council was to put our new address on the form and attach some evidence, which we did.
However that house purchase has now fallen through and we are now in the process of buying another house very close to the original house.

Do we contact the council and tell them and show them our paperwork for the new house or hold off until they offer a school. It doesn't impact our preferences but we won't complete until after school offer day.

We are worried we will contact them and they will cancel our application or use our current address which is 50 miles away.

Any advice really appreciated

Sometimes you gave a window to update the address and the application be treated n time. Otherwise you should normally use the address at time of application.

Can you call anonymously and ask? The earlier advice to put down the new (now incorrect) address seems unusual as most councils require you to use your current address and can only update once you’ve actually moved. Do you have that advice in writing?

You may run into problems in any event if the schools you’ve applied to are oversubscribed since distance to the school would be one of the oversubscription criteria and they will most likely check council tax records. If they do accept alternative evidence of a sale going through, obviously it's best to get the info in ASAP - but again, that seems unusual to me.

It was just on a call with the council, although I did email them something similar and they didn't flag anything different.

I would just leave it, update with your new address when you've completed on the house
