Y2 Times Tables

Hi. Just asking for some suggestions if that's OK. A login for TT Rockstars was provided at start of Y2 autumn term in September and the teacher has told the Y2 class that the 'heat map must be green by end of the year' but there doesn't seem to be much/any actual in-class teaching of timetables - it seems it's up to the child to learn & remember by independent use of TT Rockstars. Is this standard? Also - any good resources that I can use to teach timetables? Huge thanks in advance

Squeebles app is good. It has a teaching bit which works up in each table.

If they are following white rose or similar then they won’t have learnt times tables as such yet - just counting in different amounts. Same for my Y2 child - passwords sent home before it has been taught. We’ve done a bit on the 2s, 5s and 10s but I’m not worrying too much as I know there’s plenty of time to learn them in Year Three and Four once it has been taught.

There is plenty of time so I wouldn't worry too much but please try to ensure your child has a good understanding of what multiplication (repeated addition) and division (sharing and grouping) is by the end of year 2. This will pave the way for more fluent learning of times table and related facts in KS2. Year 4 will also be more plain sailing if your child is able to be fluent in 2x 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x and well on their way to 8x fluency by the end of Y3

I think that after the initial lessons at school on each table, there is an expectation to practise at home (as it's basically just repetition).

Our school sets very little homework but the main focus is times tables via TT Rockstars, now from y2 onwards (and spelling). There are game modes to learn different tables before getting into speed tests.

They can pick it up fast - I can see from the stats that a few y2s and quite a few y3s have them all down already.
