Squirrels WCPS Wimbledon Common Preparatory School vs Merlin

Hello,

I know there has been a similar discussion already.
I was wondering if there are any parents with children at the WCPS?
My son was offered a place to start in Sept 2026. My older one attends Merlin.
We would like to try getting them into the Kings College. I really like Merlin, it's very warm and nurturing. Unfortunately, the preparation for 7+ is limited and he needs tutoring.
WCPS is a lot closer to us and seems to make getting in to Kings more likely for my younger son. After the tour though it felt really cold? Are there any parents who could share their experience?
Yes we want academic but we also want a happy child - hope we can get both.

Thank you!

Would your child be happy going to Merlin and having lots of home prep by parents or paid tutors? Or go to a school that prep at school so more home and family time?

Both of my kids are at King’s and all boys from Squirels we know had tutors outside of school before 7+.
To my opinion the boys who are ready will get into Kings from any school (mine were at state before King’s). But they need to be about top 20 at Squirels to get in Kings. I’m not sure if it makes sense to go to Squirels, prep outside anyway and stress about being top 20 to secure a place at King’s.

Thank you. I’d still appreciate opinions of parents that have/had kids at the Squirrels.

Our son is going to Squirrels will take his 7+ next year.

we love our school; they give special attention to each pupil, they are all supported in the way that they need to be.

such a lovely atmosphere we have all the time, classes, sports, extra circular activities, they created such an environment that is academically demanding yet loving and caring. They are instilling values to boys and ensure they have great foundations to become great citizens that they will become net positive for society.

school also supports parents all the way academic or behavioural, they try to unearth every single potential not only in academic way but also so many other ways. Boys have great scaffolding around them to thrive.

if you have specific questions ping me a msg.

we also had Merlin as an option we didnt take it we were the KCS train and kind of not anymore because they are so young and they need to love learning, squirrels also make sure this is the case… if it happens great if it doesn't not the end of the world.

That is very reassuring, I really appreciate your reply. We’ve accepted the offer and looking forward to join the Squirrels!
