Moving from prep school to state primary.

Hi All, Please let me know how the transition went for you if you moved your dc from a prep school to a state primary. The 20% extra is just too much for us.

Please let me know your experiences on how your child adapted and how you adapted! I'm not too worried about academics. We are in Cambridge and the primaries have good reputations.

Our prep is amazing with lunch time "fun" classes, after school enrichment programms, sports clubs, they do things like build Minecraft castles in history / computer class. So really fun learning.

How was the transiting for your child in terms of learning experience, confidence levels and friends.

How was it for you? I am aware how lucky he is going to such a great school, and I feel so guilty not being able to send him any more.

If we continued with private I would have to change my current job, work longer hrs and with a bigger commute - and even then we would still be left with literally nothing extra, (as it is we're spending all our money on fees)

Once again I'm not too concerned about the academics, or his future if he goes to university, or his ultimate career etc. Please let's not make it a state vs private debate. I'm just so sad that I can't continue to give him all these opportunities to try all the different things avail in private schools.

Please give me your experiences if you went through this transition....

My DS aged 7 has gone through this at the start of this school year, albeit in a very middle class area with outstanding primaries. He is in Yr 3. He is ahead in English and maths as both were taught at a vrrybhih level at his prep and complains aloud being being bored, but otherwise enjoys his other lessons and has made friends. On the downside, not as many opportunities for extra curriculars and the food is apparently awful. It’s gone as well as could have, but I was quite strategic in moving to this specific area and doing lots of research on the primary schools to find the best fit for ds. DS still bring tutored as I’d liked him to do the 11+ for grammars and possibly private (decision to send to state governed by divorce, ex h refusing to contribute to school fees and I cannot afford the fees alone for a prep).
