Preparing for transition to Welsh medium primary school

We will be relocating to South Wales in January due to work and the children who are in year 1 and 3 will be starting at a Welsh medium primary school. They do not currently speak Welsh.

I was wondering if anyone had done a similar transition and any tips of good ways to develop their language skills in the meantime?

my husband and I are doing Welsh on Duolingo and are starting the Learn Welsh Entry 1 and 2 course (virtual classroom) shortly, and I have booked an online tutor to do 30 mins a week with the children starting in 2 weeks.

any apps/ TV programmes/ anything else that might help??

the school is small and they have been very positive and welcoming and they have experience of children joining as non Welsh speakers but I want to do what I can to get them off to a good start!

I've got lots of friends with children in Welsh schools but they don't speak Welsh themselves so the children started from scratch when they went to school.

There's lots of information on the government website for you to read, good luck with the move and croeso I Gymru!

Diolch! I’ve heard it’s not uncommon and the school they are going to go to seem to have lots of experience with it. I guess I’m just keen to get ahead to try and make the transition easier! Thanks for the link, I will check it out 😊
