Primary school waitlist question

dotdotdot22 · 29/04/2024 17:11

We got allocated our third choice primary so have joined the waitlist for choices 1 & 2. Our LA said that waitlist offers happen next month. Does anyone know if this is through the LA and allocated in order of preference? ie. If there is a space at our first choice does the second choice become not applicable? TIA!

@ridingfreely Haha, glad I'm not the only one who finds the whole thing pretty opaque (and stressful!)

Chances of a space being offered at both is unlikely.

dotdotdot22 · 29/04/2024 17:34

@LIZS sadly feeling like a chance of either is pretty low

Different LAs have different policies on this. You'll need to ask

I think it must depend on the LA and the schools - the schools in my LA don't find out who has actually been offered a place until tomorrow; after which you can contact the school or admissions team and ask where you are on the waiting list.

We were offered our second choice, and automatically put on the waiting list for 1st choice; advice is to accept the one you've been offered and if there is movement on the waiting lists you can find out pretty quickly.

In our area, there were 2 runs for the continual interest list, one in May and one in June…. We couldn’t see where we were on the waitlist until the 2nd run in June
essentially, if you get offered a place at your first choice then you are removed from the waitlist
if you get a spot at your 2nd choice then you stay on the waitlist for the 1st choice
please ensure you accept the place though… hope this helps

Thanks all! The waiting is so painful, already feel like we've been waiting years 😂 Good luck to anyone else also waiting to hear. 🤞🏼

If both your first and second preference schools have a place which could be offered to you, while the LA is still coordinating offers you will only be offered the place at your first preference school.

Do you mean second round allocations? Second round allocations are for anyone who made a late application after the closing date, either due to missing the deadline or because they've moved since the application deadline and needed to change their preferences. Anyone in the second round of allocations will be offered a school on their preference list if they still have space. If not they'll be given a place at the nearest school with space available and will join the waiting lists of any preference schools they missed out on, same as anyone who missed out in the first round like yourself.

People in the first round of allocations aren't included again. If you didn't get your first choices that's because they don't currently have space. They're not going to magically have spaces to allocate for the second round if they didn't have enough spaces to offer to everyone who wanted one first time around. You simply have to wait for a space to become available, either because someone else has turned it down or moved away. It will be offered to whoever is first on the waiting list.
