Year 4 boy writing / English

Hello, I have a boy in year 4 (he is summer born) if that makes a difference. He is a bright boy and scores well above average across all assessments (CAT’s, NGRT, PTM etc). However his spelling, grammar, punctuation is far lower, and sitting right on average. Is this common for a summernorn boy at this stage of schooling and would I expect it to naturally improve as he matures? He is at a prep school and they don’t seem concerned or giving him extra help but I’m wondering if you think I need to be intervening and giving him extra help myself? He reads well and has a good reading level but I’m wondering if that’s enough? Thanks

This is really helpful and reassuring, thank you Gemma. I have just bought the book you suggest and will start doing some with him at home.
