Highgate vs Latymer 7+

Hi all,

Apologies for another school comparison thread! We are a little bit confused, and would greatly appreciate your help.

DD has 7+ offers from Highgate, SHHS and Latymer.

We have ruled out SHHS, primarily because we prefer a larger school. At the margin, we prefer Co-ed as well. That narrows us down to Highgate vs. Latymer.

Frankly speaking both schools look very impressive to us - with Highgate perhaps sneaking ahead a tiny bit in terms of academic grades etc (do correct me if I am wrong on this).

We personally know parents at Highgate, who speak very highly of the school. But, we do not know anyone whose kids go to Latymer for first hand experiences. Location wise, we are planning to re-locate, therefore it is a non-issue.

With this in mind, we were hoping to have information on either school regarding:

a) Ethnic diversity: We are a mixed race family, and would prefer a multi-cultural school. We have heard Highgate used to have a diversity issue. Is that true and if so has the recent intake been more mixed? Also is Latymer more multi-cultural?

b) Wealth diversity: Highgate used to have a reputation for being dominated with super wealthy celeb families. Is that really the case, even recently? And again, is this the case for Latymer?

c) Culture: Both schools were named in the Everyone’s Invited scandal (Highgate perhaps a bit more so than Latymer). We did ask both schools, and as one would expect, they mentioned that measures have been put in place to make sure it is a safe environment for girls. Would be keen to know if this is still the case?

Much appreciate any help!

I would personally go with Highgate. We were a bit disappointed when we looked at Latymer. Not impressed by the head of pastoral care and facilities are not updated well enough. Latymer Prep’s teaching is too relax for year 3 & 4.

Agree completely - no competition at the moment. Sounds like everyone is accepting their Highgate offers over others this year. Congrats!

First of all, thank you to everyone for their comments, it has been really helpful!

One final question from my side for parents at Highgate secondary - are girls equally encouraged to take up STEM subjects as boys?

Similarly, are the great academic results more skewed towards boys as opposed to girls?

Thanks again!

In his last talk the senior head mentioned that it was around 50-50 at GSCE / A level.

the uptake of STEM subjects by girls is high and the results are good, they share the stats with the parents.
STEM department is great in Highgate in general, they have very experienced specialist STEM teachers on a roll. the school offers very competitive salary and benefits packages so it manages to attract and retain qualified staff.
