Our school splits up lessons per half term. So this half term they do maths, English, computing, geography, PE, RE, PSHE and music and then next half term they will do

Maths, English, history, art, science, DT, PE, PSHE and RE

Does your school do this too. How often does your child have a history and geography lesson?

Yes, they do. This half term, it looks like they are doing science, RE, history, computing, DT and music, in addition to maths, English, phonics, etc. It's not that they never do anything related to, say, geography, but it would be blended into other topic-focused lessons. It means they can dive deeper into a particular topic over the half term (this time it's the great fire of London for my Y1, but older one will have a similar sort of topic).

Maths, reading, phonics, writing plus play time take up the whole morning, then there is lunch and another play time, so then they only have about 1.5 hours in the afternoon each day - to squeeze in PE, RE, PHSE, science, music, art, DT, geography, history, play practice (if there is a play that half term), special guests, assembly on Fridays, etc. And the 2nd half term they are doing swimming one day a week, which is an entire afternoon (swimming pool is a 40 minute coach trip away). It's a lot to squeeze in, so I think they must divide up the terms so they can explore a topic deeply rather than in a superficial way.

Same as mindutopia. It is actually impossible to fit everything into the school day. In fact , we go further. Rather than have 45 minutes of art each week, we alternate every week so week 1 will have 90 minutes of ( say) history and week 2 will have 90 minutes of art. Each term we do either history or geography, art or DT, the rest we squeeze in on the 2 weekly cycle. Timetabling is a nightmare!

Most schools do this. It would be very hard to fit everything in otherwise!
