TTRS year 1

DS came home last week with log in details and his list of homework info only provided a link to the Times Tables Rock Stars and a recommendation that they practice a few minutes most days of the week. I have never heard of this learning tool and I just can’t get my head around it. Ds doesn’t seem to have a clue😬. I guess I’ll need to speak to his teacher but thought I’d ask here if this is normal procedure and how do I figure out how to help my child practice?

The link has parent guides which explain it all

We wouldn't use TT Rockstars with Year 1 children as they have no concept of multiplication or division yet. They don't learn this until sometime during Year 1 (often spring term) and the Year 1 curriculum doesn't call for them to know the multiplication or division symbols. I usually only introduce these with my talented mathematicians in Year 1. I would talk to the teacher and ask for clarification - how can they practise something they don't understand yet?

Seems really young? My DS started Yr3. It did really help him learn them but he wouldn't have been ready to in yr1

We use Numbots in year 1. It is made by the same people as TTRS and uses the same password so your DS should be able to log in. It covers Year 1 objectives. Our children start using TTRS in Year 2. As others have said, they won't have covered multiplication yet in Year 1.

I would question this as TTRS is an amazing resource, especially to eventually prepare children for the Year 4 times tables check, but it's not developmentally appropriate for Year 1 as they're not formally learning times tables yet. They'll explore multiplication through counting in 2s, 5s, 10s etc but there's not even an expectation that they use/recognise the x symbol yet.

Maybe there's been some confusion and they want you to use the login details to access Numbots instead (before eventually progressing to TTRS in Year 2)? I hope so. Definitely query it as I don't see any benefit of introducing it before children start learning and understanding multiplication.

Thanks everyone, I’ll speak to his teacher about it but very reassuring to hear others experiences.
