Concentration humming

Our 4 year old does a humming sound when she concentrates whilst playing and drawing etc. Its like a ooom noise. She has being doing it for a few years now and we have just got use to it as the norm. She has just finished nursery and has now started in reception. Yesterday in school the TA told her she must stop making her noise as it's distracting the other children. This TA has helped in her nursery class and said nothing. My wife js planning on speaking with her teacher after school on Thursday. We knew it would become a problem once she started proper school but thought it would be phased out with time. I don't believe she is autistic or has Adhd as she has no other characteristics linked to these conditions. I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this and what you did?

I had a hummer - turns out she has Auditory Processing Disorder caused by persistent glue ear as a baby and toddler.

The humming helps drown out the other noises around her.

APD can present in a number of ways. Some children are really badly affected, others like my daughter, not so. She has had some specialist APD therapy which has improved her hearing and stopped the humming.

I had a hummer, interested to learn of the link with hearing as D.C. had some hearing loss following a perforated eardrum / glue ear. They grew out of it.

My DD8 used to do this from about 1 to 4. She just eventually stopped, but no one ever said it was a problem. She doesn’t have any other issues as far as I’m aware, except for some sensory sensitivity.
