Our children's school send out requests for parent governor candidates, when there is a vacancy, if there is more than one interested party it is then voted on by the parents. The applicants can put forward a little 'blurb' on themselves and then its down to votes. Usually there is a fixed no. of positions for Governors, teacher governor,LEA, community, parent, to name a few. Only know this a dh recently became a parent governor.
hope is is useful!

You put in an application to the school - if too many people apply there has to be an election and the bit you put as a resume becomes your 'election statement'. You are NOT a spokesperson for the parents in the playground, you are merely representing the parents as a whole.
When you are appointed, you have to attend whole governing body meetings (usually 6 a year) and usually join a sub committee (learning & curriculum or resources).
Expect meetings to last about 2 hours.
You would also need to be able to attend governors' courses (daytime or evenings) when a course is offered which suits your or the governing body's needs.
The usual term of office for a parent governor is 4 years (or until your child leaves the school); but you can be re-elected.
You would also need time to visit the school during the working day to keep a good awareness of what is really happening. You may be linked to a subject, or a teacher, or a year group to help you.
Aim of a governor is to be a 'critical friend' to get the bigger educational picture as well as a working knowledge of the school.
It can be fun, it can take up a lot of time!
