My DD just started second year of primary school (which would be Year 1 in England) and is really struggling with writing. Letter formation is fine but she is still struggling to spell words she can easily read, gets b and d confused still and often puts a n or a d at the end of words when there is no similar sound.
she is doing ok with reading just finishing ORT level 5 in class.
I think she doesn’t want to get her words wrong so isn’t trying, if that makes sense? So the default is just to ask how to spell something so she isn’t getting practice of spelling words herself? I have reassured her that making mistakes is fine and part of the learning process.
Is this fairly common for reading level and writing ability not to match?
I don’t want to come across as an over anxious parent by approaching the teacher only weeks into term.
many suggestions of what I can do to help her?
