Transitioning to year 1

Hello,

My DS is going into Y1 this September but I haven’t had an email from the school yet with any information. At the start of Reception we got information on what to buy and bring to school but this time I haven’t got one.

So I was wondering does any of you know what to buy for Y1 as in school supplies and so does Y1 need a backpack or should we use the book bag from Reception.

I haven't had any information either, you probably will closer to start date.

But it's my youngest going into year 1, so I know the only thing he needs is the standard school uniform. Our reception class wanted wellies and waterproofs but all that is done away with in year 1.

We had the list of what to buy and send in before the summer holidays started. We can re-use most of the stuff from Reception, which is good. I've now cleaned and labelled everything again.

It will very much depend on your school, though, won't it? I'd just wait a little bit. Do you have any INSET days coming up? You might get the information then.

Most of the time, you'll be able to use the same book bag, though.

The first 2 days in September are teachers training days and no parents meeting etc. I’m just going to send my child with his book bag from Reception. Shoes still fit just got new trousers and two new jumpers.

DD also starts Y1. I was just planning to re-use her reception book bag as they will still be bringing home reading books / being taught phonics. I am sure once they start we will be told any extras they need - ie wellies etc.

I didn't mean that you'd have parent meetings on those days but that you might get an email with that information then. Since everyone's back in school then.

I would use the same book bag, but make sure you update it clearly with the new class name, ditto water bottle and snack / lunch box. I would still send in a bag of spare clothes , up until half term any way.

You will be told when PE days are and if your child will need to wear pe kit in to school or if they will be changing in school.

You won’t need to provide any stationery items, but if the class needs stuff they will let you know, but I imagine they would ask for donations to buy through their normal suppliers.

I expect the reason you haven't been given a list is because nothing has changed. They don't need anything new. Book bag can still be used again and so can the PE kit. In terms of supplies like pencils, pencil cases etc you don't really need to send them in with those kinds of things as the school will usually provide. I'd just send them in on day 1 with their PE kit in a bag all named and labelled along with the book bag and water bottle and you will be good to go.

I’ve never had a list/parent meeting other than start of reception or year 7. Just send with whatever was the ‘norm’ in July.

Busyhedgehog · 14/08/2023 16:35

We have a list. DS attends an independent, bilingual school, though, so it's a bit different.

Wow, they must do a lot of colouring in at that school!

Not really. They have a set of 12 coloured pencils and a set of 12 felt tips each. The younger year groups have the thicker pens and the older year groups the thinner ones.
DS is reusing his colour pencils from Reception. I've bought a new set of felt tips, though.

This is my experience. Nothing changed for year 1 in this respect, so I just sent them on day 1 as normal with a book bag, water bottle and PE kit.

I wish they would send a list or at least say there's no change. As far as I know ds will go from doing PE once a week to doing it twice a week, and if that's on consecutive days I need to get him two PE shirts, because I won't have time to wash in between. But no info has come out yet, and I'm running out of days I can go to the school shop to get them. Frustrating.

He can wear the same shirt twice if that is the case, Year 1 PE is not vigorous enough for a child to work up a sweat!

PE is not vigorous enough, I agree, but he is very good at getting his food down his shirt, or paint, or pen, or mud, or god knows what he even finds some days. He inevitably comes home filthy regardless of what PE he's done 🤣

mindutopia · 23/08/2023 14:39

Same as last year. There is not really any sort of transition between years now. You'll know how it works from last year.

They'll probably send out an email with any first week reminders the day or so before school starts.
