Year 6 SATS 2023 - Spelling score

On a previous thread someone shared this years raw score / scaled score conversion tables. I was wondering if anyone knew the boundaries for expected and great depth in the spelling tests? We have been given a score out of 50 (not sure if it is just a school thing or a National thing?)

It’s out of 70 for grammar (50) and spelling (20). Expected standard was 36+ and greater depth was 55+.

Thanks for that. So there isn’t a specific score just for spelling? In my sons report it says he got 119 for Grammar & Punctuation (which I understand equates to 65/70 raw score) and is described as GD. He then has 33/50 for spelling which is also described as GD. I’m amazed that score would be classed as greater depth. I’m trying to work out if that is just an internal assessment or maybe the attainment is a misprint.

The school will have his score out of 20 for spelling. I’m not sure what the 33/50 is as only the grammar element of the test is out of 50. Maybe an error as he couldn’t have got 33/50 in the grammar test since the spelling is out of 20. 65/70 is the combined tests and definitely greater depth - very good score! Worth asking his teacher I think.

That sounds like an error - Reading is out of 50 and SpAG is out of 70 (50 for SpAG and 20 spelling). Could this possibly be the Reading score, however this would be Expected rather than GD? Hope this helps a little. Def worth checking.

Sorry I meant *(50 for Grammar and 20 for spelling) x

Thanks for everyone’s responses. It turns out the spelling score is not related to sats and is a separate internal test they did at a different time.

There is no 'specific score' just for song. It's a SPAG test - Spelling and Grammar. The scores from both are combined to give a total score. Here's the link to the the standardised scores...just scroll down past the reading and maths until you get to the Spelling and Grammar. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachmentdata/file/1169073/20233keystagee2scaleddscoretables.pdf

The spelling test is out of 20 and the grammar test is out of 50, so your son could not have scored 33 in the spelling test as there are only 20 spellings. So assuming there's a mistake and that he scored 33 for his grammar, then he would have needed to score another 32 to reach 65 which would get 119 SS with the remaining score - and there are only 20 spellings, so this just isn't possible!

It does look like an error on the report, so I'd go in and speak to the teacher.
