Manchester Grammar Year 4 assessment

Hi, we will be applying for MGS Y4 entry (September 2024). DS has not done any prep yet and I am wondering if we have left it too late tbh (he is currently in an independent school but this isn't always enough).

Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare for the assessment day, or recommend any tutors/preparation material/courses please? DS is on summer holidays now so it does give us flexibility with prep.

Any help or information about the 8+ assessment would be greatly appreciated 😊

Thank you!

Hi there, we will be applying to Manchester grammar for September 25 entry - year 5 and I was wondering how your experience was in the end? Many thanks x

We have visited twice, and live the school. My son is only 2.5 however when speaking to the lady that completes the assessment on both occasions she has provided information/guidance on this. Have you been in contact (sorry I can’t remember her name).

The good folks at MGS have made past papers available on their website. Use these!

Also, EPP have some practice papers for MGS so consider using them too.

Hi! We decided to give a miss for year 4 as I wasn't sure if DS would be ready for the pressure of an exam. However we are still looking for a tutor to assess his abilities and coach him accordingly. Once he has built his confidence we can consider going for the assessment.

If anyone has any luck with tutors please do let me know.

@paularan Thank you! I have considered printing all the recent papers because I know a few schools have removed theirs recently. But from what I remember the papers are for year 7 entry only?

DS needs coaching on technique and confidence most of all. He isn't the most loudest in the class and won't necessarily be the first child to put forward his ideas, and I know that is what MGS massively look at.

I had been following this thread and it's just popped up in my notifications! We found a company called Tayberry. They're very popular and I've seen them mentioned a few times on here, but they're very very good. The lady, Jo, who runs it is fabulous.

Smartmove · 22/07/2024 19:14

@PipAndPosySuperfan is your DS doing the year 4 exams?

Yes, they'll normally publish Year 7 only online I'm afraid. I'd recommend calling the school to clarify exactly which subjects they're tested on and then buying the appropriate Bond and CGP books for Year 2/3.

Do remember that different schools place more/less emphasis on some tests than others.
