I'm so bad at these kind of things - please come and talk to me about this WORLD BOOK DAY thing they do and what you did / are doing, please

I just go blank with these things.
Lottie is 6 but as she has special needs it's not like she can tell me her favourite book / character, it's up to me and I can't think of a sodding thing.

She does enjoy 'Going on a Bear Hunt' but how do you dress up as a character from that book?

So do I just find a costume and then find a book to go with it, ie dress her up as a pirate and then find a pirate book or do i fry and find some sort of bear costume, whichj she'll probably refuse to wear?

last year when dd1 was in reception the dressing up was only for the juniors {hmm] so didn't have to worry about it

DD went as a angelina ballerina. Was dead simple - she is into dressing up anyway so had a ballet skirt and pink t-shirt, some sparkly dressing up shoes and mouse ears (that we'd been given ages ago). I painted her face and that was it.

I'd just take a teddy bear and a copy of Going on a Bear Hunt

Hmm Angelina, might work as mum is taking her to see the ballet and we just got her the book, so once she's read that a few times and been to the ballet she might be very into it?????

If not maybe I could just try and make her look as bear like as poss with brown clothes and if she'll let me paint her face a bit and do the bear hunt????

I have zero imagination when it comes to these things.

dd's friend went as Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs. He had a name badge saying "my name is Harry" and carried a bucket with toy dinosaurs.
Angelina was easy peasy.

or just a dressing up costume like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty.

Ds1's theme is Disney and he is going as a cat! just got to think of a cat in a Disney film!

and ds2's theme is anything and so he will go as Lunar Jim as that is the only dressing up costume he has!! LOL!

TC we tend to work out what fancy dress we can manage and then fit a book to work with it.

TBH, I would not sweat overmuch: having seen a couple of year's worth, there are some children whose parents make a real effort and a hell of a lot of others in their "fairy princess" dresses!

TC just pick something recognizable but easy eg Red Riding hood ? make red cape, carry basket. Or Alice in wonderland ? blue dress, blue ribbon in hair.
Or yes, use an outfit you have and adapt. DS1 has been as King Arthur and Peter out of Narnia without much adaptation (mainly the pattern on the shield lol).

Or make an animal outfit using ears on a headband and a tail on plain grey/brown clothes and be the mouse from The Gruffalo, etc . I find it helps to carry a copy of the book! (also useful as teacher can read it maybe?)
DD is going as one of the Rainbow Magic fairies (Amy the Amethyst Fairy since you ask) so I need to find a long-sleeved lilac coloured top?

Just have to decide now if I'll go for dressing her up as a bear as in 'Going on a Bear hunt' or dress her in pj's and dressing gown and give her a silver star as in "Laura's Star'. Might be odd for her staying in her pj's and going to school, she might not get what's going on, whereas dressing up might be more fun, if she's in the mood. Hmmm?????

I was trying to persuade DS2 of the merits of Horrid Henry but he's insisting on Long John Silver

DS2 and DS3 are going as Thing One and Things Two this year...if I can find two blue wigs.

(assuming they school is participating, that is, lol).

What's the betting that because I've thought of something, the school won't bother this year?
