Support thread for those on waiting list - reception year

Thought I would start a thread for others who are/will be going on the waiting list for reception year.

We got our 2nd preferred option. Gutted as we absolutely fell in love with our first choice and all their nursery friends will be at this school and so have asked to be placed on the waiting list already.

Will be calling the school admissions team in the morning to ensure we are on the list and when we will be updated about where we sit in the waiting list.

Fingers crossed for everyone else!

No news here either

freshstart99 · 10/05/2023 13:59

Can I ask if anyone had put in a appeal what grounds did they use ?

My friend didn't get her first choice and she's told us to appeal but honestly I don't know how ? Don't you have to have proof that a mistake took place ?

Do appeals work ?

I think it depends on 2 factors:

  • whether or not it is an infant class size appeals (ICS)
  • if not, whether or not you have a compelling argument.

ICS appeals are only a review of the processing of the application. Unless there was a mistake in the processing, or the decision to refuse the application was legally perverse (a very high bar to reach) then it will not be successful. In that situation, your own reasons for wanting to get in are rarely relevant. In ICS appeal is an appeal for a PAN of a multiple of 15 because it includes schools where Year1 and Year 2 cohorts are in classes of 30.

As someone who acts for schools in appeals, I've never had an ICS appeal upheld.

Charmatt · 10/05/2023 20:40

Our authority have processed late applications and made offers where there is space.

Found out we're number 13 on the list for our preferred school and all places taken up, we'd need 14 people to drop out 😭😭

Our other two preferences are in another council so we need to wait till end of May, but not holding out much hope as they're equally oversubscribed and further away (still under a mile though). I think we'll have to settle for our allocated school but it's pushed us to seriously consider a move to somewhere new in a couple years, when we're able, which will be a positive!

TedLife · 30/05/2023 15:47

We've moved down the list! 😭We were 4, now number 5 on the list. Devastated.

Oh no did they give a reason why ?

No, the council have been really tight lipped about specifics around the waiting list. They just quote back the usual stuff about how it can change all the time etc etc. I'm not sure if the people on the phones know to be honest

candlesflamesandbrooms · 30/05/2023 16:10

@TedLife ahh I'm sorry ! Is the option you have been given workable ? Unless the list changes !

It's fine, just not the school we very carefully picked out for my son because he's younger and a bit behind socially. We went for a nice small school, near our house so he can walk with us each day and despite being 0.6 miles from the school, we didn't get in. So he's now going to the bigger school which is a drive away, a stressful drop off (it's a nightmare there) and possibly an overwhelming environment for him. I'm so devastated over it for him but every week I think we'll just embrace it and try move forward... but then i cave and call to check our place on the list!

DarlingClementine85 · 30/05/2023 18:22

We're number 21 on our first choice and 13 on second choice. Kind of resigned to it now!!

Lexemy · 01/06/2023 17:20

Just to add some hope. We didn’t get our first preference school - when it felt like everyone else did.

We are currently 3rd for our first preference school - down from 9th when the lists were published in our area on 5th May. This is a 60 intake, so 10% change already. They’re not expecting too much more change now but perhaps late August or when term starts.

We were 2nd originally for our next preference but had it offered two weeks ago - which was a real surprise as single form entry so didn’t expect much movement! We have accepted this over the original offer.

It was notable that the offer gave us two weeks to respond. It makes me think that the process could move quite slowly if it’s waiting for people to respond within two weeks and they may not be motivated to do so quickly if they’re away / happy with their current allocation. So could mean offers coming up when people have mentally prepared for their current allocations.

We are likely to come off waiting list now for the original first preference so we can have certainty - as both our first and seconds were good option. The only thing holding me back is potential after school clubs as yes, by getting our second preference late, we’re now on a waiting list for after school as the last ones 🙄.

Good luck everyone 🍀

MargotTennenbaum · 01/06/2023 19:30

Does anyone know if we can expect movement on lists this week with schools being on half term? I am on the waitlist for three schools and there had been some movement on at least one list a week until this week.

Lexemy · 01/06/2023 20:40

Probably less likely if the schools have to process anything to transaction decline and subsequent offers.

Our council school admissions office has still
been open - as I was worried it was past the deadline (we had already replied) to accept the new offer but wasn’t yet updated on the portal. So they were able to confirm receipt.

SchoolShenanigans · 07/06/2023 14:26

Hi, is there any movement for anyone?

Waiting lists have gone over to schools today in our LA and we've been informed that we didn't get spaces again. Now to find out where we are on the list...

It's so stressful!

We had a parents evening at our second choice school on tuesday and stay and play next week so it's getting very hard to imagine changing everything at this point. If they called in a couple of weeks with a place i'm not totally sure what the right thing to do would be!

It did. I actually ended up knowing a lot of the people there. People I had gone to baby swimming with pre covid and never saw again. Other women I randomly met when my son was a baby so that sense of community did make it feel better. I think it will be ok ultimately, definitely coming around to the idea of the bigger school now.

Lexemy · 08/06/2023 15:35

@TedLife we’ve decided to take the offer at our second preference school (which we got offered via waiting list process in place of our third preference), and to come off waiting list for first preference.

Haven’t yet had any settling in events but they’re coming soon. As I’m a planner and like certainty, and our second preference is a very good option, we’re going to go for it!

Not sure I would have changed after the induction and settling in period now.
