Hi,

My dd is in year 4 and is struggling with the word problems. I tried searching books online so can do some practice at home but can't find many that are good.

Any suggestions about any good books or any material i can download or perhaps can take a subscription and download material from there.

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks

I like the humble books on amazon.

How strong are her comprehension and inference skills?

CGP do some good maths problem solving books. Maybe get the Y4 one, and ask your DD to read a question and talk about what it means, underline the key words/numbers in the question, and explain verbally how she will tackle it. You can help her to learn the skill of working out what the question means.

As time goes on, you can also encourage her to estimate what sort of answer would look about right, so that when she has done her calculation(s) she can compare the actual answer with her initial guess. This will help her to know whether she has chosen the correct calculations to do.

Agree, what is her general literacy like?

Do they use something like RUCSAC?
(Read, Underline, Choose, Solve, Answer, Check)

Draw a picture, Imagine herself doing it.

Sometimes they 'know' what to do if you simplify the numbers. Then they have identified the operator so can then solve.

If you can't work out what it is, it is probably divide. (OK that might be specific to my DD).
