Hi all

my sister’s son is at SPJ in lower years and has received her ds report which looks at effort mainly and attainment in English and maths.

grades for attainment are likes in big company: not meeting expectations, below expect, meeting exp, higher than expected, signif higher …
Grades for effort are never, sometimes, mostly , always

her son has got meeting expectations in English and maths. And some sometimes mostly and always in effort.

she is worried that it might not be the standard.. and he might be below the others. She is now questioning whether this is the right school for him and whether to move him into a less academic school. he has always been top of the class. He has always lack self confidence a bit and she does not want him now to feel like he is not doing well. Reality is they were all mostly top of the class before…

any advice I could give her would be much appreciated

Most kids get meeting expectations in most things. The rule is if you’re not doing well they will tell you.

as they get older they have end of year exams where you get numerical scores and they will put them in upper and lower sets for maths, English and French.

half the kids are in the lower set. The kid is doing fine.

effort grades are pretty random and may be a function of how much the teacher likes them and how much they speak up. But you can also have good attainment with low effort and vice versa.
