Spelling homework - AIBU

6 year old (year 1) missed all of his breaks (morning and lunch) because his spelling homework was incorrect.

He had done his homework (look say cover) but he really struggled with his spellings. Some of them were incorrect but he'd had a good try. He gets two days to learn them. Obviously we had discussed the errors and were going to work on them throughout the rest of the week.

AIBU in thinking he shouldn't have missed all of his break at that age to practice. I would understand taking 5 mins or so. Is this normal in schools now?

I'm a TA in Y1. My class have reading books and that's it. No other homework.
Missing breaks only happens when work is not completed in class and even then it's not the full time missed. Breaks are important.

I sometimes use a small part of break time to do some 1:1 input if kids haven’t grasped something. It is not a punishment at all. It is literally sometimes the only time I have to do this.
I would hope , however, that the children understand that they’ve done nothing wrong but I’d like to help them.
they always get some break time
