Tormead/GHS

Does anyone turn down an offer at GHS in favour of Tormead? DD has offers at both to start in year R next year. Finding it hard to choose, especially given that everyone else seems to treat Tormead as the "fallback option".

GHS is Prep School of the Year/Decade, girls in the senior school obviously achieve stellar exam results. The kids I spoke to in junior school seemed very happy and loved their school. I didn't really get that much of a feel for the school culture though.

Tormead seemed a lovely school, the head teacher of the prep is fairly new but I loved her passion for the place and the girls and felt I got much more of a feel for the school. It felt a bit more nurturing than GHS. I have read on MN that many girls leave Tormead for sixth form, which is a bit off-putting but there's a newish head in senior school so that may well change by the time DD gets there.

They're both all-through schools so the decision is one likely to be for the whole of DD's education. People seem to just assume that if you get an offer from GHS you go there, but I am torn.

People do but I think most go for GHS if they get it. It is an incredible school and so well-regarded far and wide that it is not the kind of opportunity most would turn down.

I have a DD there and other DC at other schools. It does have a culture - very girl power, fun, love learning and confidence building. It suited my shy DD which you may not imagine. It is also very nurturing and has incredible pastoral care and teaching about well-being. The new head of seniors used to be pastoral deputy for years and we have seen even more emphasis on mental health over the years.

Tormead is great too. I know parents who are happy. Heads been there a while now and modernised it well.

Both really good schools. Any current Tormead/GHS parents around to offer their views?

Yes also looking for updated info on Tormead. I have a daughter sitting the senior school process this year and have been told she would most likely be offered a space at Tormead but would sit towards the lower part of the school academically…is it a pushy school? She’s very relaxed and easy going, I certainly wouldn’t want her stressed!! But I do understand they expect a lot from the girls etc…do not want a hot house
