Learning times tables

My ds, year 2, loves maths and it comes very naturally to him. It's usually a huge effort to get him to do homework but he has never complained about doing maths homework. At the latest parents' evening I told his teacher this and she told me he should start learning his times tables if he wants some extra maths work as this is what they would be doing next term. What's the best way to do this? Does anyone have any recommendations of resources which have helped?

Our school uses an app called timestables rockstars, if school doesn’t have a license then you will need to pay but from memory it isn’t very expensive, and both mine have benefitted from it

Hi there, my DS in year 2, is also very keen on maths and we started the times tables in the summer between Year 1 and 2. Loads of games like board games on Amazon, music videos on YouTube, really helped and he obviously got the 2 5 and 10 ones easily owing to the maths at school doing the 2s 5s and 10s counting. He’s got a couple of apps for it too that offered rewards like stickers and just generally playing games in the car at traffic lights or waiting for nursery pick up!

Sorry meant to say my daughter is learning her times tables parrot fashion out of a book Which I don’t think is helpful anymore
It didn’t help that she spent two years out of school because of coronavirus restrictions and all the learning from home Whilst I was trying to work from home at the same time

There are free times tables apps for kids which use games and point reward systems to incentivise playing.
The Works also usually stock workbooks with stickers which can be helpful.
Getting him to learn patterns can be helpful, the 9 times table for example.
He should be able to learn 2, 5, 10 & 11 quite easily.

My dd is year 2 and knows them all through the times fables book; each number has a story attached and you just remember the story with the correct numbers in. She’s always had a really good memory for stories but not for numbers and it worked very well; I was impressed at how easy it was to teach.

I work in a year 2 class of a prep school and our children have already started learning theirs, we learn in the following order 2,5,10,3,4,6,7,8,9,11's

Times table rockstars is good and I have times times songs download onto my phone that I play through the car radio for my dd or a cd

Times tables rockstars is good for memorising. However, include basic reasoning problems on multiplication to bring depth to his learning you can. Most struggle with word problems.

My year 2 is secure in 2, 5, 10, 3 and 4. They are tested in order and mixed before being able to move on. He also does the division.

Have they not even started counting in 2s etc as the times tables do flow quite naturally from there.

i would also focus on speed once secure and use times table rockstars.
