Millfield Prep Somerset - local advice on living / school run

Hi
We are considering a big move to relocate to Somerset in order to send children to Millfield Prep as day pupils. Can anyone give any advice or experience of living not directly in the local area and how this works practically day to day driving or using the school bus service? We are keen to live nearer to Bath and the villages South of the city but not sure how feasible this is.
Many thanks!

I can’t help in regards to the school but it is quite a distance from Bath. It would add approx 2 hours on to the school day.

Millfield is near my PIL and I really, really wouldn’t recommend living in Bath due to the distance. Bath has some great schools or there are some lovely villages nearer Millfield.

I wouldn't say it isn't feasible. Which villages did you mean? I may be able to help if you can give me some place names. Although it's a Bath postcode it's a long way from Bath itself. If you want to live within school run distance I would look at Street, Wells and Glastonbury

Thanks for the replies.

We would like to be nearer Bath which we love and in a slightly less rural environment but weighing up if the daily school commute would be too taxing. The school runs minibuses as far as Farrington Gurney and Farleigh Services on the A36 so keen to find out from parents who do this or a similar journey how arduous it is day to day.

its not just the distance; the roads are not that great. I live nearer to the school and it would be too far for us.

is there a particular reason - like sport - that you want Millfield? It’s full of the very wealthy. I used to live in Shepton Mallet and we’d get helicopters over for two reasons: Glastonbury, and Millfield half terms and holidays.

If you want Bath, look at KES prep, it’s excellent

There is a big difference between the journey from Millfield to Farrington Gurney and Millfield to Bath. Still around a 30 minute journey though, it’s not something I would want my child to do everyday on top of an already taxing school day. Especially if you then need to get to work yourself.

I think from both locations they will have around a hour of minibus ride plus the commute to the bus stop to factor in. I know the one on the A36 and it's an Esso garage in an isolated spot on the side of a fast and busy road - main commuter route into the city.

Would not recommend. I live in a village just south of Bath - previously lived in one of the villages by millfield, and still travel back a lot. Realistically you'd be looking at an hour each way. I wouldn't do it. Tbh, millfield really isn't that great unless your child is dyslexic or very into sports - have you considered other schools if you're wedded to living near Bath?
