Hampton Prep

Hello! Our son has an offer of a Year 3 place and wondered if I could ask people’s views of the Prep? I can see more on the Pre-Prep but wondered about experiences further up the school? We’d love to take up the offer as my daughter is at another school locally, from what I’ve seen it seems to suit my son and it “may” relieve us of the 11+, but he’s so happy where he is!

Thanks!

(Little bump!)

Why did you look to move if he is happy? I assume you mean in sept 23 for the move?

sailingsunshine · 27/11/2022 17:10

It would help if you could name where he is currently but if your dd is at LEH and you think your ds would enjoy Hampton you might as well move now.

taj0112 · 27/11/2022 17:22

Thanks both, yes a Sept 23 move. Looking to move as practically speaking much easier with both getting the same bus to school and being in the same town (yup, my daughter is at LEH) and the possibility of not having to do the 11+ in addition is very inviting! DS currently at Surbiton.

I should add, DS only moved schools last year as his school shut, so part of the issue (a fairly large part!) is moving him twice in such a short time.

I don't think there is much difference between Surbiton boys prep and Hampton prep apart from the chance of the assured place. But at Surbiton prep you will have a good shot at the Hampton 10 plus.
Maybe let your ds decide or defer the decision for another year.

sailingsunshine · 27/11/2022 20:10

@taj0112 , just a thought but it might be worth asking around the year 2 SHS parents and see if any other ds are making the move as that would make it a bit easier. Or start with LEH parents and see if they know of anyone who is in a similar position.

AdoniaMG · 27/11/2022 20:19

I am not a Hampton Prep parents, but have many friends who are, everyone speaks so highly of it. And if your DD is already at LEH, i’d think it is a no brainier really.

taj0112 · 27/11/2022 20:27

Thanks all, none moving from the various cohorts but have insights from those about similar situations. Agreed Adonia…. Just breaks my heart to move him when he’s only just moved and loves it! First world problems 😂

Not sure if you’re still reading
my youngest is at the prep and I’m moving him out end of the year

Head very rigid ; they have the upper hand obviously due to the assurance place situation and there is zero communication/partnership between school and yourself especially if there is an issue you’d like to discuss

pre prep is lovely! The Headmistress is great! Accommodating welcoming gentle ….

prep head very different story hence we re moving !

good luck with whatever you decide to do x

taj0112 · 10/12/2022 16:36

Thanks for your message and views. It seems very different to the views of any others I’ve spoken to but probably a balanced view! Is this move related to a lack of SEN support?

OP posts:
LoveMyADHD · 10/12/2022 19:25

No, my youngest doesn’t have SEN, he’s quite on it academically, he also got top scores to the CAT 4 two months ago

problem is if you’re not confident your kid will get the assurance place is really not worth going there as they don’t have the greatest 11+ results

and if you do want to have any discussions of this nature with the school they shut you down

it all depends why you want to go there, if the reason is for the assurance place you need to think what you going to do if you dont get it

Armarium · 11/12/2022 13:01

Just seen these messages, my son passed the assessment and was offered a place in year 3 next September (2023), we need to decide by 13 Jan.

We also don’t know any current parents, though a few whose boys are older, and went through the school, so it’s hard to gauge what it’s like currently.

It’s disappointing to hear you felt they aren’t communicative, thank you for your honesty.

We have a few other options but Hampton Prep was our current fave.
