Activities to help writing and spelling year 1

So my DD is summer born and at the end of last year (just weeks before summer holidays) we were told she was behind in writing. She was doing all her letters, writing her name and copying words and sentences but not writing them independently. This year I can see her writing is coming on massively, she’s getting full marks in their weekly spelling tests and is writing independently some sentences on her own (with some mistakes).

She loves maths and we practice that daily with her, getting her to practice spelling is a little more hard work. I have a few spelling workbooks which are good, but will probably be finished by Christmas. So I would like some ideas or good workbooks to help support her writing so that she doesn’t need to be in the support group anymore.

Well you could drill her through the Schonell spelling lists (absolute classics, been in use for years, sets of words that gradually get more complex)

Or just read lots and lots with her

What area of learning to write is tricky for her/what are her barriers? How's her phonics? Gross and fine motor skills? Pencil grip? Does she understand what a sentence is? Can she recognise where finger spaces and full stops are needed? Can she build/rearrange words into a sentence when given word cards? Is it having the ideas of what to write? Or is it remembering what she is going to write? Does she know how to use a sound mat? What writing opportunities does she have at home? Is it confidence? Does she see you and others write at home (and make mistakes, too)? Do she read lots?

Different approaches to each of these challenges!

What does her teacher say?

*Does she read lots? Typo!

it’s only just arrived so I’ve only had a quick look through but it’s given me some lovely ideas to try with dd.
