So many Dorset Prep School Choices!!! Help!

We are currently looking around Dorset for a prep school for our DC, 2 boys, and 2 girls, and there just seems to be so many options it’s becoming very hard to decide even after looking at some of them, especially for our boys!! There are many coed schools so we’re looking for one that’s geared more towards boys simce we’re pretty decided on Hanford for our girls. For reference we’re located around Sturminster Newton for any recommendations that wouldn’t be too far.
So far here’s what we have:

Hanford - An all girls schools which we have completely fell in love with for our daughters. Small class sizes, beautiful school, horses, as well as a day and flexi-boarding option.

Port Regis: This is one of our favorite choices for our sons, it seems to be sporty, although it seems quite large. I’d love to know the class sizes for different year groups but there looked to be about 50 kids in year 8 last year. They also have a local boarding option of 2 nights per week which is a great option for us. Also pretty close.

Sherborne Prep: I’ve heard so much about this school, both good and bad and I’m not sure what to think about it. I’ve heard they have smaller class sizes which is good, but they don’t seem to have as much green space. This would be a farther drive though. I believe it used to be a boys school, is there still more boys than girls or has that changed?

Clayesmore Prep - A small school, seems to be about 20 kids per year, a similar size to Hanford it seems. I don’t know too much about the school, I’m honestly a little more keen to the senior school rather than the prep but I’d love to hear any one’s experience with the school. They do seem to offer flexi boarding as well but it doesn’t seem as well established.

Bryanston Prep Knighton House - Not really considering this school as it doesn’t seem to have many boys, as it used to be a girls school, although it does seem nice. Would this be a good option for a boy or should we dismiss it altogether? We considered this for our girls as well but we liked Hanford more.

Leweston Prep - About as far as Sherborne Prep, it also used to be a girls school so I don’t know how the boys numbers are now. I don’t know too much about the school but people seem to like it.

Sandroyd - I’ve heard people really love this school, but this would be a very far drive for us, 30 minutes there. I feel like this would just be too far to go daily, even with flexi boarding two nights per week. If it’s really so wonderful for a long drive I'm open to it! They do require all students to board in year 7 and 8 which we aren’t sure we want to do, and if we do full boarding we would prefer it to be at an all boys school. I don’t know if I want a school where we would have to move later if we didn’t want to board.

I think that’s our whole list!! A long thread but if anyone is a parent at one of these schools I’d love to hear! I think our main problem is that we wanted a single sex school for our boys, as we’re doing a single sex school for our girls. This brings in the consideration of doing a boarding prep school later, but that’s something else entirely. We would also want to pick a school with a good nursery with half day classes for our younger children.

I’m also interested about Sherborne Prep as I’ve heard they haven’t been doing good recently but I don’t have any personal experience with the school!

At the moment on mumsnet there seem to be a lot of very pro or very anti posts about Sherborne Prep as well as some very pro Leweston ones on the same threads - I would take those all with a pinch of salt as I think the schools are competing for bums on seats at the moment and it wouldn’t surprise me if it was a member of staff or governor from the schools posting!
You don’t mention your boys’ ages but a lot of the schools you mention have low numbers in pre prep - that may or may not be an issue for you. Port Regis has impressive grounds and seems to be on the up again with a good new Head after a few years of change.
I don’t want to add to your confusion but Dumpton is also Dorset and I hear good things about it!

Go and look at them all
Dumpton doesn't offer boarding
Transport...most have small mini busses

CountryMumAtHome · 12/10/2022 23:29

@Suttonstracke Yes that does seem to be the case with a lot of the Sherborne Prep threads I’ve been seeing! Some are very for or against so we’re going to tour the school soon. We are mainly leaning towards Port Regis at the moment so it’s good to hear it’s on an upswing. Our other top choices are between Sherborne Prep and Clayesmore so once we visit some more I’m sure we’ll know! I also see what you mean with there being smaller class sizes in pre-prep at Port Regis, I’ve taken a look at their Instagram and the younger years don’t seem to be as big as year 8. We would prefer some smaller class sizes (10-20/30) but if they grow in later years that wouldn't bother me (more of a good thing honestly!).
We’ll also take a look at Dumpton!
Mini busses would be a plus but not a must so we’ll check that out as well.

We are quite new to PR but the younger classes are small! Y3 for example has got 11 children in each class (two classes) and as they go up through the years the whole year groups grow but they increase number of classes, there are three classes in Y6 for example. Boarding is lovely too- many flexi boarding and good number of full boarders in prep too which makes the weekends fun.

Hazlegrove is decent.

pdrummond · 12/02/2023 22:08

lived in Dorset lots of our life. We love Port Regis, Dumpton, Hazlegrove and Sandroyd. All excellent offerings. Clayesmore and Leweston weren’t academic enough for us. The three changes of Sherborne Prep heads as well as rumours of closure put us off. Also love Hanford but have two boys!

Marple88 · 07/04/2023 15:13

Sherborne Prep is in good hands, don’t let any rumours put you off! A great new head and very supportive parents. Good luck with the search!

That’s good to hear, but our children were at a prep with an excellent head and a parent group who loved the school but that’s not enough to keep a school going…..

Time4the · 15/05/2023 23:32

My sister’s DC are at Sandroyd. It’s a lovely school with amazing grounds, and they are happy there. The Headmaster is switched on and seems to have good links to the Public Schools.

Class sizes can be variable - in Y3 my niece had 19 in the class - which felt too big as there was no permanent TA.

TeenLifeMum · 16/05/2023 13:33

There’s a huge difference between Leweston and bryantston/Sherborne in prices! Very different clientele.

I’d choose hazelgrove as a prep round here - has a lot going for it and feeds into kings as well as Eaton etc if parents wish.

SW1amp · 22/11/2023 21:45

I am waking this thread up to see if anyone has any current or recent opinions of Port Regis vs Sandroyd for pre-prep boys moving from a fairy rigorous London school?

Somersaulter · 16/12/2023 18:27

Given the ages of your children you could pick the one that feels right now knowing you can change your mind. With PR it will be interesting to see who will take over as next head.

LamaRama · 16/12/2023 22:29

What makes you say that @Somersaulter - is current one leaving? Not been there long.
